Im Rahmen von DC Open, das von Düsseldorfer und Kölner Galerien gemeinsam ausgerichtete Eröffnungswochenende, ist im Projektraum des Galeriehauses an der Schanz und in den Räumen der dort beheimateten Galerie Warhus Ritterhaus Ben Cotrell zu sehen.
Im Kontext der Museumsnacht 2003 war der Brite mit einer Solo-Schau in der Kölner Simultanhalle zu Gast. Behind the swamp lautete der Titel der an düstere Filmkulissen erinnernden Installation. Jetzt aber zurück in die Zukunft: Wir sind gespannt auf Cottrells kommende Schau im Kölner Norden und drücken die Daumen für den totalen Ausverkauf. Hier folgen Auszüge aus dem Pressetext:
With Dream Sequence, Ben Cottrell (* 1972 Cornwall, England) formulates his fourth solo exhibition at Warhus Rittershaus, during which he shows both in the gallery's main exhibition space and the project space of the ADS1A gallery building. Cottrell shows large image collections, collaged onto raw canvas and composed of various fragments of his everyday artistic practice, which yield atmospherically exuberant pictorial worlds.
Incorporating an installative intervention and the artist's publication Occult Photography, which will be published by the Verlag für zeitgenössische Beobachtung on the occasion of Dream Sequence, Cottrell translates the atmospheric content of his work in an almost documentary manner, as an interdisciplinary synthesis of the arts, into an extended dimension. He points to the inalienable relationship between the artistic need to produce and the perpetual inclusion of the same motifs and muses, in order to once more celebrate the overlapping themes of his artistic work, such as mortality and joy, nature and myth, popular culture, mysticism and the elevation of the female form.
